PLAN AHEAD WITH CLASSIC CAR RESTORATION

Remember that ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day’, and a classic car restoration is exactly the same.

It can take anything from a few months to several years, depending on the condition of the car, and how much you can commit in time and budget.

Given the possible size of the project, it’s sensible to map out a plan of action before getting under the bonnet.

Indeed, two of the main things to consider before even touching a spanner are budgets and research.

The budget will depend on the make of car and size of the restoration, while not forgetting other requirements such as parts and tools. Working out how much it will cost can be a deciding consideration before starting.

Meanwhile, you’ve obviously chosen your classic for a reason, whether that’s for sentimental or practical reasons, but still take the time to research its history, look for any common issues and check the availability of parts. Aside from finding out more from Clayton Classics, good places for advice can be found by joining forums, social media groups or car clubs specific to your classic.

It would also be wise to give the car an initial inspection or ask a classics expert to do so if you’d value a second pair of eyes. It’s at this point that anything glaringly wrong should be picked up, while it’s still not too late to consider your options.

DOCUMENTATION AND PHOTOS VITAL FOR restoring a CLASSIC CAR

Being organised is key to a successful restoration project and this is particularly true when it comes to taking the car apart.

Remember to label everything and take photos as you go along. Documenting the condition of parts will pay dividends when sourcing replacements if they are needed.

Rust can also be a major consideration. Depending on the severity, treatments can include replacing entire panels or using rust convertors or patches for less serious cases.

As for the disassembly, start from the inside, such as seats and dashboards, and work your way out to the bodywork and engine.

ENGINE, MECHANICS AND ELECTRICS

If your classic car’s not running, then you’re not going anywhere!

The engine work required can range from simply replacing a few parts, such as gaskets and pistons, all the way through to a complete engine rebuild or replacement (which is why an initial inspection is important).

Brakes and the steering system must also be given the attention they deserve being safety critical elements.

The electrics, likewise, should be checked for any damage, while upgrades can be carried out at the same time.

It’s also a good opportunity to inspect the air conditioning and heating system and consider an upgrade if necessary to make the car enjoyable to drive all year round. You may even be able to install one for the first time if your classic does not have one.

BODYWORK AND FINISHING TOUCHES

When the car is dismantled, then check it for any knocks or other damage (plus the previously mentioned rust).

Soon it’s time to turn attention to the paintwork to ensure your classic looks its best. Steps to remember include preparation work, applying adequate layers of paint, followed by polishing and detailing.

GET YOUR MOTOR RUNNING

After reinstalling the components, refilling fluids, conducting some final testing and fine tuning, it’s time for the moment you’ve been waiting for.

While there may be surprises along the way, if you think of all these elements, you should have a completed classic car restoration. All that’s left is for you to enjoy your pride and joy for many miles of happy motoring.
