why winter storage preperation matters

For many classic car owners, the end of summer means putting the car away until spring. While storing a classic car can help protect it from poor weather and road salt, simply parking it in the garage and putting a cover over it isn’t enough.

Taking the time to prepare the vehicle properly can help reduce the risk of corrosion, battery problems, deteriorated tyres, damp, and mechanical issues when it is eventually brought back onto the road.

clean your classic before storage

One of the simplest steps is to thoroughly clean the car before it goes into storage.

Dirt, road grime and moisture left on the bodywork can contribute to corrosion, particularly around wheel arches, sills and other areas where moisture can collect.

The underside of the vehicle should also be considered, especially if the car has been driven during wet weather.

Make sure the vehicle is completely dry before covering it.

check the fluids

Before storing your classic, check the condition and levels of the relevant fluids, including engine oil and coolant.

It is also worth looking for any signs of leaks. A small leak that is easy to overlook during normal use may become more noticeable when the vehicle is standing for several months.

look after the battery

A classic car that is left unused for an extended period can gradually lose battery charge.

Consider using a suitable battery maintenance charger, following the manufacturer’s instructions, to help maintain the battery during storage.

If your battery is already showing signs of weakness, winter can be a good opportunity to investigate the underlying cause rather than waiting until spring.

protect against damp

Damp and condensation can cause problems for both the interior and mechanical components of a classic car.

A dry, suitable storage environment is preferable. Ventilation should also be considered, as trapping moisture inside the vehicle can lead to problems with carpets, trim, wiring and metal components.

check the tyres

Tyres can lose pressure while a vehicle is standing for several months.

Check the pressures before storage and inspect the tyres for cracking, damage or other signs of deterioration.

The spare wheel should also be checked where applicable.

inspect the bodywork

Winter storage provides a good opportunity to look closely at the condition of the bodywork.

Look for bubbling paint, rust, damaged seals and areas where moisture may be collecting.

Identifying corrosion early can make repairs considerably more straightforward.

make winter the time for maintenance

The months when your classic is off the road can also be an ideal time to carry out servicing, repairs, restoration work or upgrades.

Taking care of work during the quieter months means your car can be ready to enjoy when the next driving season begins.

Our Coventry workshop provides classic car servicing, repairs, restoration and specialist upgrades for a wide range of vehicles.

If your classic is going into storage this winter, contact our team to discuss any maintenance or work you would like to plan during the off-season.
